Housed within the Department of Natural Resources & the Environment at Cornell University, the New York Invasive Species Research Institute (NYISRI) works to advance invasive species knowledge and the scientific basis of management through research and collaboration.
We aim to strengthen networks and reduce the fragmentation of our invasive species response by filling gaps in collective knowledge and questioning the ways we currently manage, or have failed to manage, invasive species in New York State.
The ecological impacts of invasive species are often unknown and difficult to measure directly. We are continually working to better understand these and inform management efforts.
How do we determine the effectiveness of different management techniques? Are we actually improving? We are working to develop and implement metrics for measuring success of management outcomes.
How do we know when and where to apply limited resources? By continuing to evaluate the impacts of invasive species and outcomes of management, we can better inform the prioritization of species and strategies.
As knowledge advances and outcomes of management are better understood, a key step forward is increased accountability for our goals, actions, and decisions. This requires consistent implementation of well-understood and supported management strategies, and extends beyond agencies charged with invasive species management.
